Lauryn Hill a no-show for The Weeknd Grammys performance
According to a rep for the singer, her performance was never approved of and would have been of “last minute nature” due to Hill’s hectic concert schedule.
The former Fugees singer was scheduled to join the Canadian star during his set at the annual prizegiving, but failed to take the stage with him when he performed his hits Can’t Feel My Face and In The Night in Los Angeles.
Hill, 40, who is also an actress and music producer, did not notify the Grammys production team that she would not make it to her collaboration song number with The Weeknd. When it came to actual showtime we were told that she was late – one minute, three minutes, seven minutes, she didn’t make it. She didn’t make the performance, didn’t get into the building on time.
“The Grammys announced a performance by Ms. Lauryn Hill prematurely and without approval”, Hill’s reps said in a statement. Then we had a dress rehearsal [Sunday] that she did attend.
Portnow said the Hill performance was not announced and was meant to be a surprise.
Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said after the Grammys that it was a “disappointment” that Hill was a no-show for her performance at the nationally-televised show.
The other musician whose performance was highly anticipated was Lauryn Hill. I’m sorry, that’s the bottom line.
Sound issues hampered Adele’s performance and a health issue forced Rihanna to cancel her planned performance.
A doctor on site recommended she pull the plug on the performance or risk permanently damaging her vocal cords.
Another appearance fans were buzzing about was a suspected, though never officially confirmed, cameo from Lauryn Hill during the Weeknd’s shot in the spotlight.
Interestingly, Portnow was more accommodating and understanding of Rihanna’s condition, probably because she informed them well ahead of time that she would not be able to come.
She has just released her album Anti, and was, ironically, going to sing Kiss Me Better at the ceremony.
