Laverne Cox is to star in the ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ reboot
Kenny Ortega is in as director. Will she make this role even a bigger part of history like the originator Tim Curry did back in 1975 playing the “transexual from Transylvania?”
Lou Adler, who produced the film version of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and its its follow-up, Shock Treatment, and Broadway producer Gail Berman will serve as executive producers on the Fox version. “Frank-N-Furter, a sexually ambiguous flirtatious alien mad-scientist, is holding an annual, Transylvanian science convention to showcase the birth of “Rocky Horror” – a fit, attractive man created exclusively to fulfil Frank’s desires”.
The “Rocky Horror Picture Show” is about sweethearts Janet Weiss and Brad Majors played by Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick in the original who got stuck in Dr. Frank-n-Furte’s mansion after their auto broke down. Bringing in Cox, an advocate for transgender equality, adds an intriguing twist to the role.
Cox has helped pave the way for the transgender community making the trans community more visible. “I am so honored to be a part of the Rocky Horror legacy”. While other cast members are to be finalized, Cox has secured her role in the project. Frank-n-Furter is loud, boistrous and extremely flirty with both sexes. Cox has turned in a few great scenes in Orange Is The New Black, but when called upon to expand her acting range, such as in her small role for the 2015 film Grandma, she was…okay. Although not as well known for her singing, Cox has gained critical acclaim for her portrayal of Sophia on Orange Is the New Black. It has been said that her celebrity status helped a lot in helping the world change their view when it comes to dealing with and accepting transgenders. Dr. Frank-N-Furter needs a lot more than “fine” and “okay”.
