Lawyer says Ohio officer is depressed, in shock
A University of Cincinnati police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man has been charged with murder after a grand jury investigation, the Hamilton County prosecutor said on Wednesday.
Just that morning, Judge Megan Shanahan set Tensing’s bail at $1 million. Tensing, who has been fired by the university, was released from jail on bond later Thursday. “I’ve been doing this for over 30 years”, Deters continued.
“This officer was wrong”, Cincinnati police chief Jeffrey Blackwell said, adding that officers “have to be held accountable” when they are in the wrong. “It’s an absolute tragedy in the year 2015 that anyone would behave in this manner”.
From the body camera’s recording after the shooting transpired, at least one of the officers erroneously told fellow officers that Officer Tensing had been dragged by DuBose’s vehicle, but that discrepancy was not in a sworn statement that the two officers subsequently gave.
As shown in Tensing’s bodycam video, shortly after the shooting Lindenschmidt and Kidd can be seen recounting the incident, and backing up Tensing’s false account of what happened at least three times.
Terina Allen, sister of Samuel DuBose, sits with family members in the court yesterday. He did not at all.
“With the political climate in this country with white police officers shooting black individuals, I think they need somebody to make an example of”, Mathews said.
Tensing reported cuts and bruises to some fingers.
His attorney, Stew Mathews, said Tensing had feared for his life during the altercation with Mr DuBose, so he drew his weapon. “Ladies and gentleman, this is a courtroom”, she said sharply.
On Wednesday, prosecutors released footage from Tensing’s body camera.
“I chose last night to show a movie”, McGuffey said.
Police officers are often accused of targeting motorists based on whether they are driving in high crime areas or fit a particular description. But the case was eventually settled out of court for $638,000 and the officers were kept on. “We wanted the truth to come out”. Kidd can be heard saying he saw Tensing being dragged. “But, that doesn’t excuse away bad behavior”, he said.
“Can we not get a supervisor?”
“I didn’t even do nothing”, DuBose replies. “I thought it was going to be covered up”.
We went through the first 25 seconds of this video frame by frame, trying to pinpoint where Officer Tensing was when Officer Kidd and Officer Lindenschmidt arrived. It showed the moments after Samuel DuBose was shot. DuBose remains calm throughout the interaction, and Tensing appears to become increasingly agitated. He has been fired from his job. “He thought he’d be sucked under that auto and run over”.
“It is our belief that he was not dragged”, he told reporters. Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters argued Wednesday that the auto began moving only after DuBose was dead, and that his foot must have pressed the accelerator after he was shot.
