LAX back to normal after false report of gunman
Police responded to 911 calls of shots fired at the airport but later said the reports were unfounded and there had been no gunfire or injuries.
Immediately after the incident, Airport Police began receiving calls of an active shooter in Terminal 8, according to the news release.
While flights were reportedly seen taking off again, as of 10:32 PDT, LAX reported that some terminals were still being cleared and advised travelers to contact their airlines for flight status.
Reports of an active shooter brought a scene of chaos to Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday night, bringing travel to a halt and causing delays to pile up into Monday morning. The interior of the terminal appeared to have been abandoned by civilians as the police searched for any sign of a shooter. The airport said it requested a ground stop of flights from the Federal Aviation Administration on the south runway complex because of passengers who ran onto the airfield.
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the source of the initial report.
Footage posted to social media shows passengers being evacuated onto the tarmac. One man fell down, scraping his arm and hand, and was bleeding.
The man in the Zorro costume was apprehended and questioned by authorities.
CNN reported that LAX officials via Twitter said a Zorro-costumed individual had been detained by airport police.
