LB Von Miller unlikely to reach long-term deal with Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos placed their exclusive franchise tag on Super Bowl MVP Von Miller on Tuesday.
The one-year tender offer means Millers salary will be no less than the average of the top five salaries at his position. The $13.7 million designation is essentially a one-year contract offer which Glenn can sign or negotiate a longer-term deal with Buffalo.
Manning met repeatedly at the NFL Scouring Combine with Broncos general manager John Elway, who also alunched talks last week with free agent-to-be Brock Osweiler, the likely heir apparent at quarterback if Manning steps away after 17 NFL seasons.
But at this point, the Denver Broncos do not appear to want Manning to finish out the final year of his contract, even if he wants to come back.
Sure, command and respect in the locker room are important to have in a quarterback, but Osweiler’s eight-game sample size is somewhat small to say there won’t be a drop-off from Manning, one of the best quarterbacks in National Football League history. “So far it’s been good, we’re in the ballpark, at least I believe so … Because I think everyone accepts and understands that he’s not going to be back in Denver, so the question is where does he go and play?” This confirms an earlier report from Woody Paige at the Denver Post, stating that Peyton Manning is ready to “ride off into the sunset”.
However, Patrick Smyth, Broncos PR vice president, has denied that Manning has made any formal decision.
But the Broncos aren’t waiting around for him to make a decision. He turns 40 later this month.
If Manning was to play next season, he would have to complete a physical by Friday, according to reports.
Alex Marvez of Fox Sports writes that it is “not a matter of if but when” the team and Manning will part ways.
Finally, March 9 marks the beginning of the 2016 salary cap, which has been set at $155.27 million.
Elway told NFL.com on Thursday that he would not pressure his quarterback to make a decision and that the pair planned to meet again in the next week or so.
“We’re going to give Peyton the time that Peyton deserves because of 18 years”.
