Leaked Colin Powell Emails Show Criticism Of Trump, Clinton
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell dismissed the years-long Republican outcry over the 2012 terrorist attack on the USA diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya as “a stupid witch hunt” in leaked emails published by BuzzFeed News on Tuesday.
The leak was first reported by the Intercept and Buzzfeed, who attributed the breach to DCleaks.com, a website said to have ties with Russian cyber spies.
In the emails, Powell said he stayed relatively quiet during the rise of Trump, the Republican presidential nominee.
Powell told Miller, according to BuzzFeed, that Trump “is in the process of destroying himself, no need for Dems to attack him”.
Almost 30,000 of Powell’s emails were stolen by hackers and given to DCLeaks.com, reports said.
Powell added that he “warned her staff three times over the past two years not to try to connect it to me”.
For weeks Hillary Clinton and her staff have done everything possible to lawyer themselves away from newly damaging details surrounding the FBI’s criminal investigation into her use of a private email server during her time as Secretary of State. As for Powell going on air to criticize Trump, Powell said he would “pick the timing”, and that “to go on and call him an idiot just emboldens him”. “I told her how I was using my personal computer for [unclassified] emails”.
In an email reported by NBC, Powell wrote that he had told Clinton’s “minions repeatedly that they are making a mistake trying to drag me in, yet they still try”. I had to throw a mini tantrum at a Hampton’s party to get their attention.
Powell has acknowledged using a private email account with both senior USA officials and for back-channel communications with foreign dignitaries.
Congressional Democrats have seized on the use of a private email addresses by Powell and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as a foil for Republican attacks on Clinton.
According to The Intercept, Powell regularly exchanged emails with reporters and friends about Clinton’s server controversy, explaining that his situation had been different than Clinton’s.
Powell also laments Hillary Clinton’s attempt to equate her use of private email at the State Department with his.
“Been having fun with emailgate”, Powell wrote on March 9, 2015, days after the news broke about Clinton’s use of a personal server, according to The Daily Caller. In another spot, he declared of Clinton that “Everything HRC touches she kind of screws up with hubris”. “As long as the stuff is unclassified”.
“Wow, I didn’t follow rules”, Powell wrote. I had a secure State.gov machine.
