Leaked Cruz audio has Trump readying attack
Donald Trump on Friday tweeted out a warning to Ted Cruz, the one opponent he’s not yet attacked, saying it looks like the Texas senator is getting ready to come after him – and he’s ready for him.
During the fundraiser, Cruz also lumped Trump in with fellow candidate, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.
“What’s interesting is that Cruz has just been assuming that he will inherit the lion’s share of Trump’s support, and I’m not sure that true”, said Kyle Kondik, managing editor of Sabato’s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics. “I don’t believe he’ll be our president”.
Mr. Cruz described both campaigns as having a “natural arch” with gravity “pulling them down” now. Cruz did mention that Carson’s descent has been much faster than Trump’s.
“I understand that Cruz doesn’t want to alienate Trump’s supporters, but if Cruz doesn’t help defeat Trump, then maybe Trump does better than Cruz, and then Cruz has done nothing to halt the momentum of a candidate who could prevent him from winning”. “Who am I comfortable having their finger on the button?’ Now that’s a question of strength, but it’s also a question of judgment”.
Both stand to lose more than they would gain from attacking one another, as they appeal to numerous same sorts of voters, especially in Iowa where Cruz has been surging. Not sure if that technically counts as misleading, but that’s rhetorical hair-splitting.
“Judgment is a question for all candidates for president of the United States”. (A RINO scourge like Cruz must detest Trump’s leftward tendencies in private.) To an ego like Trump’s, though, it may be genuinely wounding that Cruz, despite insisting here that he “likes and respects” Trump, is essentially playing him for votes. He and his aides believe that Trump has changed the tenor of the contest to Cruz’s advantage by highlighting issues such as distrust of Washington and immigration. Now the question becomes how Trump responds. However, Cruz has been climbing in the polls and is now emerging as Trump’s top rival. “Will be easy!” Trump tweeted on Friday morning. The only bit that stings a little is the reference to Cruz’s “bosses”, by which Trump means his donors. He could point out that Cruz has said he favors a return to the gold standard, and that his (Cruz’s) tax plan contains a hidden 19 percent national sales tax.
“In the course of a presidential election, the voters are going to make a decision about every candidate”, Cruz said in a press release. I’ll leave you with two GOP primary thoughts: (1) Jeb Bush’s Super PAC has reportedly burned through half of its once-intimidating $100 million fundraising haul.
