The legislative support comes after more than 172,000 people have so far signed a petition on Change.org to pressure Peña Nieto and Foreign Affairs Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu to allow 10,000 Syrians refugees into the country.
And the same could be said for Qatar, which spends a fortune in sponsorships for Spain’s Barcelona soccer club and other high-profile world institutions in an effort to portray itself as a modern and generous global player, while it denies asylum to Syrian refugees in its neighborhood.
“There is a moral imperative for that, but there is also a real connection to the refugee crisis in Europe“.
He noted that millions have been displaced by the Syria conflict. A lot of them are packed into camps in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.
Last week, the Syrian refugee crisis came to a head when over 4,000 migrant refugees were detained at the Hungarian border.
But he argued the scheme would encourage more to risk the Mediterranean crossing, which has claimed many lives.
The minister wasn’t finished there and continued hypothesising militants could be travelling to Europe through Turkey and Greece.
“The resettlement of 20,000 refugees over five years is certainly a relief to the concerned individuals, but the number is too small to be a significant relief to the refugee crisis as such”.
Paula Savini, community outreach director for Catholic Charities in Delaware, said the group receives referrals from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops to resettle refugee families in the state.
He called on Britain to give them a “warm welcome”, saying the offer of sanctuary was “something the whole country can be proud of”. “That concerns me”, Mr McCaul told ABC television’s This Week programme.
In Dallas, Nabil Kalo, a member of the Syrian American Association who immigrated to the United States a year and half ago, assists in making sure recent arrivals are aware that “all refugees are welcome” in Texas.

Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron vowed Monday to obtain the votes necessary for the House of Commons to approve an airstrike campaign against the Islamic State group in Syria.
He added: “It is commendable that Europe is opening its borders and its hearts after the haunting images we have seen of migrants trying to get to Europe”.
“But I also have to tell you, I have tremendous confidence in the work that has been and is being done by U.S. security agencies”, he added.
The current conflict in Syria-between the government forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and various rebel groups-has displaced over four million refugees, most of whom have fled into neighboring countries; in particular, Turkey and Lebanon have borne the brunt of the crisis, with over a million refugees in various camps within those countries.
“It’s such a question mark all of the time”, Savini said.
“We’re proud of our track record on this issue and the fact that we’re gonna continue to explore options here in the United States to do more”.
