LeBron James still plans on re-signing with Cavs, confirms to team
Real GM reported that James has yet to sign with the Cavaliers, but there is still little to no reason for the Cavaliers to wonder if they can not secure James as the star certainly just wants to ensure that he will get the most out of his new contract. So stay tuned.James declined to exercise the $24 million player’s option in his previous contract for next season, which made him a free agent on July 1.
LeBron James has reportedly informed the Cleveland Cavaliers that he will re-sign with the team at some point this summer.
ESPN reported J.R. Smith and Tyronn Lue still remain unsigned.
Re-signing Smith at $15M/year, if the National Basketball Association rumors are true, will be costly for the Cavaliers as they will hit the luxury tax once again with the big contracts of James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson.
The Cavs are still expected to re-sign Smith, with whom James shares an agent, Rich Paul. James has vacationed in Spain and Hawaii in addition to spending time at his new home in Los Angeles over the last month.
The Cavs found a gem when they took JR Smith from the New York Knicks, who was just a throw-in when they traded Dion Waiters in a three-team deal with the OKC Thunder. As with a year ago, when Paul represented both James and then-free agent Tristan Thompson, the free agencies are being conducted separately, sources said. Amongst the Cavs’ Big Three of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love, Smith acted as an important floor-spacer and pressure release when defences paid too much attention to one of the Cavs’ stars.
James still has no timetable for negotiating or signing a deal, sources told ESPN on Monday. The situation with Lue is a little more complex. When he was promoted to head coach in January, Lue verbally agreed to a three-year deal but never signed the pact.
The Cavs paid his $5 million last season, and with the big contracts that were being shelled out in this free agent market, J.R. actually has a modest price tag.
