Led by Alicia Keys, 23 stars appear in racial justice video
The star-studded cast of celebrities are seen in brief, individually spliced clips listing 23 scenarios that have resulted in the police-involved deaths of black men and women over the past few years. Her latest campaign is a powerful video in which musicians and actors honor and memorialize some of those Americans who’ve been killed for living while black. People tend to paint victims as saints as they are made martyrs and hashtags in the several anti-police brutality movements, but this isn’t necessary and I believe it is somewhat of a disservice. “Signaling a lane change”, she says, her voice barely holding together her disbelief, before Sandra Bland’s picture appears. “Riding in your girlfriend’s vehicle with a child in the back”, explains Beyoncé before a picture of Philando Castile is shown. “Running to the bathroom in your own apartment”, Chris Rock says.
Beyoncé, Chance The Rapper, Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, Janelle Monae, Common, Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, and more are speaking out against police violence in America.
“We demand radical transformation to heal the long history of systematic racism so that all Americans have the equal right to live and to pursue happiness”.
“When we get 100,000 we’re going to walk that petition directly to the White House”, Keys said. Doing so may result in civil and/or criminal penalties.
