Leeds DJ Chris Moyles is back with a bang at breakfast time
He ranted: “Many people took that as a radio station just for blokes”.
“Everybody is welcome to this radio station”.
Speculation has been rife that his return spells disaster for Radio 1 breakfast DJ Nick Grimshaw, who inherited the show from Moyles in 2012 and will now be competing with him over listener numbers, which have already dropped during his tenure. “Get ready Great Britain – live from Leicester Square, London”.
The first two minutes of Moyles’ show…
Former Radio 1 breakfast host Chris Moyles is leading the new venture which is specialising in indie and alternative music.
The presenter, who chose Girls Aloud’s Love Machine as his first song, implied that he wouldn’t be the only one to defend the station over the week, adding: “I’ll tell you now, this is news to me and everyone on this show…so let me be the first of many Radio X DJs to say this over the next days”.
Chris branded the label “confusing” for listeners and said: “It was just a marketing thing – it should never have gone out in the press release”. “Everybody calm down”.
Clearly the jury’s still out on this one, but whether you think Moyles is the undefeated king of morning radio, or a meanie with a stare like a haunted pail, there’s no denying that his inaugural show was an undoubted success given it quite literally broke the internet, with many listeners complaining that apps and streaming links to the website had stopped working due to the strain.
Ashley Tabor of Radio X’s parent company Global said in a press release: “Radio X will focus on fresh rock and guitar-based music alongside huge personalities”.
Bolton-born Vernon Kay is next up to present the mid-morning show, with Johnny Vaughan taking over drivetime and Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson at weekends.
Moyles took the helm of the programme and embarked on a close to half-hour introduction after the show began at 6.30 am.
Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles has returned to the airwaves on Radio X – the new name for Xfm.
Stereophonics will be coming to Bristol as part of the Radio X Road Trip.
CEO Stephen Miron said: “Given the phenomenal all star line up on Radio X, which includes Chris Moyles at breakfast, we want to make sure people right across the United Kingdom hear all about Radio X”.
