Legendary RB Herschel Walker says LSU’s Leonard Fournette is better
Syracuse only trailed by seven against LSU early in the fourth quarter.
After Strickland scored, LSU recovered the ensuing onside kick and held on for the victory.
And what made Fournette’s effort more impressive was the Syracuse defense’s previous success against the run. “And so we would invite and insist on inviting all of the best to the field”. The Horned Frogs survived a shootout in Lubbock thanks in big part to Boykin but they still have to play West Virginia, at Oklahoma State and Baylor the rest of the way.
The playcalling is not offensive. “They have goals for the season”. A couple of plays here and there was the difference. While the offense has not blown the doors off anyone, it has been effective, and one of the ways it has been effective is giving roles to all those players.
Of course, Walker is one of the greatest college football players of all time – winning the Heisman Trophy in 1982 during an insane season at Georgia. Defensive end Lewis Neal and linebacker Deion Jones were hit with personal foul penalties.
While not the fleetest of foot, Lewis is used frequently in jet sweep action.
But now comes the biggest test of them all. It gives the opponent one more thing to prepare for and defend against.
The run defense is pretty darn good.
In three games, Fournette has rushed for 631 yards and eight touchdowns. In addition, quarterback Brandon Harris was sacked twice. It had allowed an average of 48 rushing yards per game. Boykin has completed 64.7% of his passes for 1,470 yards and 14 touchdowns while adding another 184 yards and two scores on the ground. Take it from a man who’s been there, done that.
It’s one thing for a 20-year-old basketball player with spectacular individual skills to go to the NBA. Exhibit A: Wake Forest. “There were a few nerves in the first half”. Pujals went 23 of 37 for 195 yards. “It’s going to sit on the shelf”, said Pam Randazza, owner of Black & Gold Sport Shop, said. The Orange may be playing for a more attractive bowl bid.
By the way, this is not new. “I’m probably 100 pounds less for sure, but his mentality is to run the ball hard, and my mentality is to run the ball hard too, so I just wanted to try and put my team on my back and get a W”.
There is another side to this story, of course, and it’s the side that says the three-year wait is a smart rule that works for the vast majority of college players who are headed to the NFL.
It’s not just the guys on offense, either.
So far, no player has intentionally missed a season to preserve their body and I agree with Saban that doing something like that would speak ill of a player’s character and the type of teammate he might be in an National Football League franchise. Would NFL GMs think Fournette isn’t committed to the game? Everyone else connected to college and pro football thinks that way.
First, the season has to play out. And he’s right. If you asked me this same question previous year, I would’ve picked Chubb.
