Legendary Rock ‘n Roll Musician Chuck Berry dies at 90
According to a US state of Missouri report (via Facebook) medics arrived at the home of the music legend Chick Berry, in St. Charles County, to find the singer-musician unresponsive. And when it comes to music, as you may know, Berry’s impact is undeniable – he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, alongside Elvis Presley.
On a sad day for early rock fans, the St. Charles County Police Department in Missouri confirmed Berry’s death on its Facebook page. Changing the name to “Maybellene”, Chess sent the track to an influential New York DJ, and it became a hit among the teenage set.
The end of an era.
On his 90th birthday last October, he announced that his first brand new studio album in almost four decades would be released in 2017. With his catchy melodies, witty lyrics and trademark guitar riffs, Berry has had an immeasurable impact on rock music.
Berry wrote a number of songs about Johnny B. Goode, but this was the one that made the biggest impression on popular culture.
Rolling Stone Magazine voted Berry the fifth greatest rock “n” roll artist of all time.
In a statement released to EW, Joan Jett said, “Hail hail rock n roll”. For many years (and in some circles, to this day), rock guitar was defined by Berry’s distinct, T-Bone Walker-inspired doublestops and frequent, dramatic use of slides, slurs and bends. He did time in reform school as a youth for attempted armed robbery, was indicted for tax evasion and false tax returns in 1979 (resulting in three months in jail), and, 1990, sued for illegally videotaping women in his restaurant’s restroom.
Berry laid the foundation for rock “n” roll..
Berry’s family requested privacy during their time of bereavement. In 1952, local musician Johnny Johnson invited him to join his band and perform at the Cosmopolitan Club, an all-black nightclub. The album was dedicated to his wife of 68 years, Themetta Berry.
