Lego unveils first minifigure in a wheelchair
In an effort to promote inclusivity, Lego has introduced a new wheelchair element in one of its newest sets.
The minifigure is on display at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg, Germany, the biggest toy fair worldwide. It’s the first time that Lego has addressed physical disabilities in their sets, the next move in Lego’s move toward making all builders feel welcome.
A Lego figure in a wheelchair is pictured at the Lego booth on January 28, 2016 in Nuernberg during the 67th International Toy Fair.
The inclusion of a wheelchair Lego piece may have been the successful culmination of a petition that had captured the attention of the world.
“My heart skipped a beat, it’s just fantastic”, says Toy Like Me co-founder Rebecca Atkinson in an interview on ITV news.
“We have previously offered buildable wheelchairs and also a LEGO DUPLO wheelchair, but this is the first wheelchair molded at LEGO minifigure scale”, he said.
Previously, McNally indicated that the company offered buildable wheelchairs and a LEGO DUPLO wheelchair. Aided by the success of The Lego Movie, sales grew 18 percent previous year.
