Leo Dicaprio wins Best Actor at Golden Globes
Sunday’s show marked the return to the Globe stage of Ricky Gervais, making his fourth appearance as host of the annual ceremony.
The smart money is on this being DiCaprio’s year to nab an Oscar, and his Globe win for best actor in a drama cements his lock for at least a nomination from the Academy, if not the golden guy himself. After all, Richard Linklater won the Best Director prize (Boyhood, 2013) at the Globes past year only to lose to Inarritu.
“Last time I was here, it was 1977 and I was hit by tumbleweeds”, said the emotional Rocky star. “A film is forever”.
In an awards season that has lacked definition, two of the top critical picks – the journalism procedural “Spotlight” and Todd Haynes’ lesbian romance “Carol” – went home empty-handed.
January might not be everyone’s favourite month in the calendar, but for us it means one thing: it’s awards time – yay!
Some of the applause of the night was heard when Leonardo DiCaprio’s name was announced as Best Actor in a drama.
The Martian. Revenant may have garnered the night’s big prize, but Ridley Scott’s space epic snagging best comedy is a major win as well. “Comedy?” Scott wondered after taking the podium to accept the award before answering with a skeptical wave of his hand.
Supporting Actor: Sylvester Stallone, “Creed”.
The Best Actor Golden Globe-Oscar connection held true for last year’s victor Eddie Redmayne (The Theory Of Everything, 2014).
“Shut up, you disgusting, pill-popping deviant scum!” he said by way of greeting the crowd at the event organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. She thanks David O. Russell, Joy Mangano and her family, before telling someone, possibly, David O. Russell, “I want us to be buried next to each other”.
Sean Penn was a hot topic at the Golden Globes, even though the actor didn’t attend.
“I love seeing Ricky once every three years because it reminds me to get a colonoscopy”.
Or when Taraji P. Henson topped everyone in the Best Actress in a TV Drama Series for her role as Cookie Lyon in “Empire”. “To anyone I forgot, I’ll write you a thank you card”.
Other quips included: “He’s been the only person Ben Affleck hasn’t been unfaithful to”. The actor later said the almost $600 million success of “The Martian” was an unlikely pleasure: “I have made a lot of movies that people just didn’t go see”.
Winslet won for best supporting actress in a film for her role in the biopic Steve Jobs, and Stallone won for best supporting actor in Creed, in which he reprised his iconic role of boxer Rocky Balboa. Despite an accomplished film career, the 41-year-old DiCaprio is still looking for his first Oscar.
The wins for “Mozart”, along with those for “Mr. Robot” (for both best drama series and for Christian Slater for best supporting actor), were in line with the Globes’ history of honoring first-year shows. Universal Cable Productions’ Mr. Robot was Best Television Series in the Drama category.
Rachel Bloom won the best actress in a TV series – comedy for “Crazy Ex Girlfriend”.
“Eva Longoria and America Ferrera aren’t just attractive, talented actresses”. Denzel says he lost his speech, oops! As he wound down, Washington finally granted: “Yeah, I do need my glasses”.
The Lethal Weapon star had gone on stage to present the trailer of Mad Max, which was nominated for the Best Picture award. “The Holocaust has become over the years a distraction”, said director László Nemes. We had a very solid opening weekend because I think people appreciate seeing a different type of cinema out there – a more visceral type of movie.
