Leo strikes at Oscars while Chris Rocks it with Colored jokes
Vikander’s honor was the first of the major acting categories handed out Sunday, but the show had already gotten off to a brisk start thanks to host Chris Rock’s no-holds-barred monologue.
“The Revenant” had a golden night by taking home the top honours, including a Best Actor gong for Leonardo DiCaprio and Best Director for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, at the 88th Academy Awards. Somewhat similarly in 2014, the very good “20 Feet From Stardom” won over Oppenheimer’s mind-blowing “The Act of Killing”.

The film “Spotlight” won the Best Original Screenplay award while the Best Adapted Screenplay went to “The Big Short”. In another annoying upset, best documentary went to the perfectly decent “Amy” over Joshua Oppenheimer’s deeply powerful “The Look of Silence”, which was distributed by Austin-based Drafthouse Films.
George Miller’s stark action epic “Mad Max: Fury Road” shot into an early lead, picking up six awards for best costumes, production design, make-up, film editing, sound editing and sound mixing.
There may be more awards to come, with the film nominated for 10 awards all up – another record haul – including Miller for best director. The Revenant received the Achievement In Cinematography award.
Rising star Brie Larson, 26, took home the statuette for best actress for her role as an abducted young woman in indie movie “Room”, adding to her armful of trophies from other award shows.
Australian cinema just had its biggest year ever, with a number of films – namely Mad Max: Fury Road – crushing the box office both locally and overseas. Margaret Sixel, who is the wife of Miller, won best editing for the film.
“Fury Road” rocks his team to battle with a giant flaming guitar. Spotlight, about the journalists who uncovered the sex abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic church, also won for Best Original Screenplay. “Is Hollywood racist? You’re damn right it’s racist”, he said.
Documentary (short subject): “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”. He confessed that he considered bowing out as host but concluded: “The last thing I need is to lose another job to Kevin Hart”.
