Leonard Fournette runs 4.51 and 4.52-second 40-yard dashes
McCaffrey ran a 4.59 in his second attempt, and posted a 37.5-inch vertical leap. But Florida State’s Dalvin Cook, generally considered Fournette’s only equal in this draft class, had a jump of just 30.5 inches.
Fournette rebounded with an impressive 4.51 (unofficial) on his first 40 run. Doug Martin ran it in 4.55 seconds in 2012. So as the NFL Combine gets underway, Brady has a motivational message to the participants for this year’s showcase. Here’s Brady back in January: “I’d crush my combine today from when I was 22”, he said.
Fournette, who entered the Combine with some questions due to his weight, answered them rather definitively with his dash time.
Another NFL evaluator said Williams’ tape already suggests to teams whether he’s a fit or not, but if he shows unexpected speed, it could help open Williams to teams that have some hardened standards.
Fournette was limited to seven games because of lower-body injuries as a junior. “It’s the ability to push whatever weight you are”. That was better than all but four offensive linemen.
Linemen at the combine have to either show they’re big and strong or quick and nimble, and USC’s Chad Wheeler did neither.
“I feel it will be my athleticism (that will surprise coaches) I feel I’m a guy who is very explosive”.
While Fournette’s results concern some, NFL.com draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah – a former NFL scout – isn’t one of those people. Running back Chris Johnson holds the current record, completing the drill in just 4.24 seconds in 2008. If he walked into a room you might say, “Linebacker”. Many decisions will be made about players from the outcomes of the on field drills and the person to person interviews that take place throughout the week. So there’s 330-340 some-odd players here and for him not being here because of those issues, personally I don’t think that’s real fair because we have a lot of investigation that we want to do on him. According to the Indianapolis Star’s Stephen Holder, Cook will meet with the Colts tonight.
