Leonardo DiCaprio Cracks Jokes While Getting His Oscar Engraved
It was the actor’s sixth Oscar nomination overall, following nods in previous years for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator, Blood Diamond, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
As the raging diversity row continues to divide Hollywood, Jamie Foxx has brushed off the controversy by injecting some humour into the scandal.
Stand-up comic Chris Rock brought an arsenal of material to Sunday night’s 88th annual Academy Awards show. People wondered if Rock would dance around the subject or tackle it head on, and it didn’t take long for awards show viewers to get their answer. Rock received praise for seamlessly combining issues of race with appropriate humor. So, I thought about quitting.
“Comedian Amy Schumer said, “Welp @chrisrock murdered #oscars”, and talk show host Oprah Winfrey gave Rock two thumbs up, adding “@chrisrock now you Breathe!” I’m sure there were no black nominees some of those years, say ’62 or ’63. Some people call it ‘Creed.’ I call it ‘Black Rocky‘. “So at the same time I’m watching these very sanctimonious liberals suffer, I also know that it’s not good for the country that we go through this”.
“We had real things to protest, we were too busy being raped and lynched to care about who won best cinematographer”. Again, I would’ve liked to see this concept expanded to include more than just black actors, but it doesn’t take away from the importance of the message contained within this bit of satire from the Oscars.
DiCaprio won the award for Best Actor for his role as a frontiersman in The Revenant – his sixth time nominated for an Oscar and first time winning.
Rock also answered the question: “Is Hollywood racist?” But it ain’t that racist that you’ve grown accustomed to.
“Everyone wants to know in the world, is Hollywood racist?” It’s like, “We like you Rhonda, but you’re not a Kappa”. “There are things that happened in Star Wars that are more believable than things that happened to Rocky“. “To me, this is the most existential crisis our civilization has ever known and I wanted to speak out about that tonight”, DiCaprio said in a backstage interview.
“It’s not about boycotting anything. We just have to have the political will”.
