Leonardo DiCaprio’s Golden Globe win doesn’t guarantee him an Oscar
Leonardo DiCaprio edged one step closer to Oscar glory in early 2016 after winning Best Actor for The Revenant at the Golden Globes.
The Revenant – and Alberta-shot survival tale of Hugh Glass (played by DiCaprio) – won best drama, director and actor at the awards show.
The Revenant was later named best drama, and Alejandro G Inarritu best director, while Ridley Scott’s The Martian won in the musical or comedy category.
“Carol“, a classic melodrama by Todd Haynes and based on a book of the same name by Patricia Highsmith, was considered the favorite with six nominations, but went home empty handed, just like “Spotlight”, which had three nominations.
Best foreign language film went to Hungary’s Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul”, a harrowing view of life inside Auschwitz, and best animated film went to Pixar’s acclaimed “Inside Out”. The social media app didn’t track last year’s Globes, but for comparison’s sake, 2015’s Oscar telecast pulled in 9 million app users for a total of 25 million social interactions. The SAG Awards air on January 30.
The Gervais-led Globes evidenced little of the seriousness that marks most award shows, or the teary-eyed acceptance speeches. I don’t think she’s consciously trying to be graceful, but I want her to achieve that because I think that shows a lot of integrity if you can handle tough times with a certain amount of equanimity.
The British actress beat nominees Jane Fonda, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Helen Mirren and Alicia Vikander to win the award.
Also, the Golden Globes recognized many new talents.
Other key winners included Sylvester Stallone, 69, who received a standing ovation as best supporting film actor for reprising his iconic role as boxer Rocky Balboa in “Creed”.
However, the 41-year-old has now revealed what really happened during the humorous moment caught on camera, and admitted he didn’t realise Lady Gaga was walking past him. But the results don’t necessarily predict how the Academy will vote when Oscar nominations are announced later this week.
Moving onto television, the victory of John Hamm and Taraji P. Henson for their roles in Mad Men and Empire, respectively is worth applauding.
Tom Hanks also presented Denzel Washington the Cecil B. Demille award.
