Les Miles: The best leader LSU could have asked for
Fisher has been the head coach at Florida State since 2010, succeeding the legendary Bobby Bowden after previously serving as Bowden’s offensive coordinator and being tabbed as the coach-in-waiting. Miles said Wednesday he has not spoken Alleva since last weekend.
When I watched Ohio State beat Virginia Tech in the season opener with a second-half performance that left me in awe of the talent on the roster, the only problem I expected him to have was getting playing time for all his future NFLers and navigating the playoffs. “I’m not going to get into my view”.
Miles, 62, had his seventh 10-win season two years ago, a national championship appearance and Southeastern Conference championship in 2011 and a national championship in 2007 along with another SEC title that year and a SEC West title in his first season in 2005.
“Certainly we’ve dealt with distractions before, but it appears to be a very prevalent and evident distraction”, said Miles. “I would love to think that there’s another 11 years”. During the meeting, he urged his players to focus on Saturday night’s game against Texas A&M, not his job status, receiver Malachi Dupre said. Just like how past year LSU was a really young team.
It didn’t seem all that plausible that he’d walk away from $15 million, and that’s not something you negotiate your way past in half a day (and multiple sources had told me that Les and LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva did not meet on Sunday). I have a good relationship with coach Miles, and you have to think about it. Before the three losses, people weren’t talking about firing him because LSU was undefeated. “And it’s one of those things that you enjoy and you reflect, but I don’t know that necessarily that you share”. Miles has won 77.5 percent of his games at LSU, the best winning percentage for any coach in the modern era of LSU football.
If Miles’ contract is terminated, he has a hefty buyout clause.
Players over the past few days have defended Miles, and some have praised his coaching record at LSU. Hawthrone, who is preparing to enter retirement at the end of basketball season says, he’s going to take a vacation and has already planned one.
As for Fisher, who knows?
With him back in him play, expect home-state schools Florida and Florida State to get strong looks.
“South Florida, as we’re finding out, wasn’t a bad football team”, Fisher said.
The Tigers (7-3, 4-3 SEC) host Texas A&M (8-3, 4-3) in their regular-season finale on Saturday, amid reports that Miles could fired afterward regardless of the outcome.
