Les Miles to remain Head Coach for LSU Football
On a night in which coach Les Miles was carried off the field by his players and saluted the LSU student section in Tiger Stadium, the biggest surprise occurred in his post-game press conference.
When asked if it was hard to remain focused on football when the media constantly reports eminent doom, Miles responded confidently.
“F. King Alexander said, ‘I want you to be our coach”. Athletic Director Joe Alleva remained silent regarding the rumors until after the A&M game.
“We have to develop a passing game and throw the football if we want to be successful”, said Fournette, who has been encountering defenses that have emphasized stopping the run and dared Harris to beat them through the air.
Miles said he would consider changes to his staff and offense.
Steele and Chavis are lifelong friends and talk to one another regularly – even during this season while they are at rival schools in the SEC West. Each grew up near one another in Dillon, South Carolina, and went to Dillon High and Tennessee together. “This team should be competing for championships”. The announcement capped more than a week of speculation that Miles was on the verge of losing his job after his first three-game losing streak in his 11 years at LSU. “I agree with Joe”. “You have to win all the time, and I get that”.
While Alabama has continued its run near the top of college football, LSU has gone in reverse.
The question is whether Miles can ultimately escape the same fate as former LSU coach Charlie McClendon, whose 137 victories is the most in school history. “I’m very pleased about tonight’s outcome and very pleased that Coach Miles is our coach”.
Alleva would say that he looked forward to moving forward with Les and winning championships, together.
“It’s not enough to win occasionally”, Miles said.
The buzz regarding Miles’ job instability continued well before kickoff Saturday.
Thanks largely to Fournette, LSU drove into field goal range four times in the first half, but Domingue, who’d missed one field goal attempt all season coming in, missed two of four in the first half. Of course, as a whole, the season was a disappointment for the Tigers, as their College Football Playoff hopes quickly dissipated during the month of November with three straight losses. This gives Miles and the Tigers the spring to implement a new offensive system, one with greater run pass balance.
All that preceded Alleva’s stunning announcement, which is sure to delight LSU faithful everywhere as well as others confused by some Tigers boosters seemingly having turned on Miles.
But for now, let’s not worry about the man (Nick Saban) who is the scourge of Tiger Nation, but rather let’s celebrate the man who though it seemed he was hanging on merely by a thread, persevered through a near-public lynching and yet still managed to come out unscathed.
As quarterback Brandon Harris took a knee to ice the Tigers’ win, “Keep Les Miles!” reigned down from the crowd.
