Les Miles Will Stay as LSU Coach
Despite numerous reports throughout the week, LSU head football coach Les Miles will maintain his position at the school after the Tigers’ (8-3) 19-7 win over Texas A&M (7-5) on Saturday night in Baton Rouge.
A report surfaced on Friday that Miles told Tigers booster members that he would be fired after Saturday’s game, but the head coach refuted that and instead survives another season.
Les Miles celebrated several victories Saturday night, then revealed a few of his emotions as rumors swirled about his future at LSU.
Not even the addition of former Tigers defensive coordinator John Chavis to the Aggies’ coaching staff has helped.
LSU’s offensive motor – Fournette – is in good condition, but the carburetor, the transmission, the fuel injector seem to need a tuneup. After the final whistle, the coach was carried off the field.
It would have been quite a send-off, except LSU’s administration doesn’t want him going anywhere after all.
According to LSU athletic director Joe Alleva, that isn’t the case. LSU had trailed 10-0 to Alabama, 21-0 to Arkansas and 24-0 to Ole Miss in the first halves of its three previous games and never caught up. I have talked with coach Miles about our program.
“The “Les Miles” thing kind of reminded me of me”. We are committed together to working together and competing at the highest level.
The LSU coach admits the strain was hard as speculation about his tenure in Baton Rouge swirled the past two weeks.
“We just need to throw the ball more accurately”, Miles said during a halftime interview with the SEC Network. First, firing him would have risked public backlash. We are a pretty talented football team. “We did that this season at times”, receiver Malachi Dupre said. “I agree with Joe”. “Winning championships is something Joe wants to work toward fully and I’m right with him”. It’s not enough to win occasionally.
In an fantastic scene following the win, Tigers players carried Miles off the field as the crowd chanted “Keep Les Miles!”.
LSU players didn’t find out until word began circulating about Alleva’s announcement.
When the times to beat Saban has mattered the most, Miles has been unable to get the job done, plain and simple.
“The serious and overhaul with the offense… does that include Leonard Fournette?” he asked.
Fournette finished with 1,741 rushing yards in the regular season, eclipsing the 1977 LSU season record of 1,686 by Charles Alexander. “It was hard for everybody”.
Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin said his team’s turnovers and problems protecting Allen tipped the game in LSU’s favor.
The Tigers moved 54 yards in 11 plays late in the second quarter, but after two straight Harris incompletions had to settle for a 50-yard field goal attempt by Domingue. “LSU played very well on defense”.
Miles also has what could be the No. 1 recruiting class in all of college football prepared to sign in February.
And they got their wish.
The day was filled with an overwhelming and vocal show of support for Miles from the fan base.
