Lesbian romance ‘Carol’ tops Golden Globes nominations
The 2015 Golden Globe nominations have been announced, and the list of nominees provides irrefutable proof of the growing status of digital-only content within the world of television and film.
The Globes nominations were announced a day after the Screen Actors Guild award contenders.
“Today they are turning out to be one of the most exciting places on television”.
Best television drama series nominations include HBO’s Game of Thrones and Netflix’s Narcos. Fonda, who was nominated for supporting actress for “Youth”, won her first Golden Globe as most promising newcomer female for her debut in 1950’s “Tall Story”.
Brie Larson for “Room”, Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn”, Cate Blanchett for “Carol”, Alicia Vikander for “The Danish Girl” and Rooney Mara for “Carol”.
Fellow streaming video outlet Amazon snagged five nominations (up from two last year) and Hulu scored its first. The film received nods for best screenplay for Tarantino and Ennio Morricone for his attractive score – the movie has a lovely overture – but the only actor recognized was Jennifer Jason Leigh for best supporting actress.
The fact that Zadora’s billionaire husband Meshulam Riklis flew members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to Las Vegas to hear her sing and dance probably had nothing to do with her Golden Globe Award.
SNUB: Elizabeth Banks, “Love and Mercy” Although Paul Dano made the Golden Globes short list for his performance as a young Brian Wilson, Banks wasn’t so lucky for playing his wife.
Out of Netflix’s three nominated shows, Orange is the New Black and Narcos rounded up two nominations per program, while the dramas House of Cards and Bloodline and the comedies Master of None and Grace and Frankie each received one.
Lesbian romance drama “Carol” and Wall Street misdeeds comedy “The Big Short” led a diverse range of films honored with Golden Globe nominations on Thursday, with genres spanning indie thrillers to big budget sci-fi action adventures.
Also nominated were Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”), DiCaprio and Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”). Smith, whose last few films have performed badly with critics and at the box office, gets a big lift with this nomination.
The march continues through the Academy Award nominations January 14, and conclude with the Academy Awards on February 28. Perhaps it’s the result of a decision to campaign the ensemble in the supporting categories, causing Keaton and Ruffalo to cancel each other out.
Lady Gaga was nominated for Best Actress in a TV movie or Limited Series for American Horro Story: Hotel but faces stiff competition from Kirsten Dunst (Fargo), Queen Latifah (Bessie), Felicity Huffman (American Crime) and Sarah Hay (Flesh and Bone). “Boyhood”, Richard Linklater’s experimental project in which he filmed his actors over the course of 12 years, and “Birdman“, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s similarly unconventional backstage dramedy seemingly filmed in a single take, proved worthy opponents, with “Birdman” eventually taking the big prize on Oscar night.
