Leto doubts Hollywood is ready for gay leading man
DC Comics can’t seem to catch a break. It is the next part of Zack Snyder’s Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. The two-and-a-half-hour slog was held back by too many unnecessary narratives, choppy editing and garbage writing. It’s a lot more fun and lighter in tone than BvS.
DC’s Man of Steel (2013) managed 56 percent on Rotten Tomatoes while Batman v Superman is sitting on a woeful 27 percent rating – but the films made a healthy $1.5 billion between them.
Some of the character back stories are great, others not so much. Or so people thought.
There’s an terrible lot riding on Suicide Squad for Warner Brothers and their DC cinematic universe. And rising star Margot Robbie agreed to portray the Joker’s psychotic girlfriend, Harley Quinn – who became an immediate fan favorite after the studio teased footage last summer at Comic-Con.
Ayer found himself in a bit of competitive hot water on Monday, when he shouted “F**k Marvel” at an audience during Suicide Squad’s New York City premiere.
Dini has talked extensively about the process that went into creating one of the most popular DC characters, but it’s still wonderful how fast she made her way into readers’ hearts.
Can you get any more complimentary than this? With that being said, the reviews given to “Suicide Squad” should have credibility.
“Jared was really the first person who kicked things into another gear”, recalls Will. Their chemistry is genuine and entertaining. Survivor, Challenge, and Multiplayer modes are getting a few Suicide Squad themed perks along with the new gear and companion cards.
While Batman v Superman is rife with sore spots, “no movie is without sin” as CinemaSins say, so this is going to be a beat down of super proportions. As a result, the first 20 minutes acts as an introduction to the cast of insane characters.
He previously tweeted in defense of the film, quoting Mexican revolutionary figure Emiliano Zapata: “Prefiero morir de pie que vivir de rodillas”, which Entertainment Weekly translated to: “I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees”. While much has been made of Jared Leto’s turn as the Joker, he doesn’t get much screen time. Besides his role in Harley’s backstory, the time dedicated to him is sorely needed elsewhere, like, for example, developing Courtney’s Captain Boomerang, a surprisingly amusing performance. It’s over-the-top without being scary or intimidating. I’d compare it to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Attempting to introduce and develop this many characters in such a short time span simply isn’t possible, and it hurts the movie.
The biggest issue in the film is DC/WB still trying to find their footing. “She’s not a victim who just goes where she’s told to”. At one point in the climax, there’s a shot framed between Harley’s legs and butt. In this film, she is no longer with the Clown Prince of Crime.
It all hurts to watch so much because there are bursts of a really great movie beneath all the trash. It was enjoyable seeing the characters on screen and interacting with each other, and one of the best scenes of the film may be a simple bar scene where the squad takes a breather and has a brief conversation in between fights. It lets these characters – whose performers are all phenomenal – shine, and that’s what works. In this case, the game is Injustice Gods Among Us and its roster is growing with the addition of the Suicide Squad, well… kind of.
