Letter to the Editor: Why Not Health Care for All?
Medicaid is central to America’s health care system.
Despite slight differences, the health care legislation under consideration in the Senate retains the same sickening goal of its House counterpart: cutting taxes for millionaires, billionaires and big corporations at the expense of working families.
Imagine an 84-year-old widow with dementia (I’ll call her Barbara) whose daughter made the hard decision to move her into a nursing home two years ago. Gulager was invited by National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization to travel later this month to Washington and discuss with members of the state’s congressional delegation concerns about the House and Senate health care bills.
The CEOs’ letter said Medicaid cuts in the bill would harm low-income communities in OH and their medical providers. People could sign up for Medicaid Expansion until 2020, and the federal government would still pay 90% of the cost. So when Raymond lost his ability to work, he also lost his coverage. It pays for half the nation’s births and almost two-thirds of all nursing home care. Instead they should qualify for Medicaid, or state-run health care for the poor. His mother postponed retirement to pay his premiums for him.
Medicaid now allows these kids to be covered while they live at home (a family member is paid via Medicaid to care for them). “The caps are going to put states under so much financial pressure that they are going to do away with the things they don’t have to cover”.
Portman is among 10 GOP senators who oppose the health care bill’s current version.
“This is further proof that the Affordable Care Act is failing”, said CMS Administrator Seema Verma. The findings, just published online in JAMA Internal Medicine, come as some policymakers have argued that Medicaid is a broken program that doesn’t provide enrollees adequate access to medical care.
Tennessee Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, both Republicans, introduced a bill earlier this year that would allow those with no Obamacare options in 2018 to use their federal premium subsidies to buy policies outside the exchanges.
For the 2016 plan year, 281 issuers had submitted plans.
One and a half million people with pre-existing conditions could face higher premiums under an amendment to the Senate’s healthcare bill being pushed by Sen.
Despite real challenges securing the necessary support to move the bill forward, Senate leaders have pledged to do so, right after they return from their July Fourth break.
“There is rhetoric out there that Medicaid is failing to deliver high quality care to enrollees”. She said health care in Oklahoma always has been a “political football”.
There are a lot of people in rural areas who, just when they talk about the Affordable Care Act, say they’re very concerned about the rising premiums and also just not insane about the requirement that individuals buy insurance. Like the ACA, premium tax credits under the BCRA would be tied to the cost of a benchmark marketplace plan, though the benchmark would have higher patient cost-sharing than under the ACA.
When I grow old, I want to be able to visit a doctor when I need to, get the care I need at home or in a nursing home.
I hope that all who read this are healthy and never need anyone to help them with anything. I don’t want them to have to give up their own lives and careers, or go bankrupt paying for my care.
