Lewandowski doubtful for Mainz clash
Their Poland striker Robert Lewandowski is in awesome form with seven goals in just two games including his historic five-goal haul in nine minutes last Tuesday, when Wolfsburg were routed 5-1 at the Allianz Arena, plus two more in Saturday’s 3-0 win at Mainz.
The Mexican made way for Stefan Kiessling soon afterwards, but ex-Dortmund midfielder Kevin Kampl hit the post as Leverkusen came within a whisker of a second in the final ten minutes. If he somehow does get more shots at goal per game, then there could be serious competition from the Polish striker, who is actually younger than both superstars.
Yet Bayern sports director Matthias Sammer warned that despite their good run, a slip-up against Dinamo ahead of their big Bundesliga game against Borussia Dortmund on Sunday could prove costly. The Frenchman has scored three goals in his first two Premier League appearances – the first ever teenager to achieve this feat.
“This is something I have never experienced before”, Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, left stunned on the sidelines, told reporters.
A superb strike by Wolfsburg’s Daniel Caligiuri had given the visitors a shock lead until the 27-year-old Lewandowski sent Bundesliga records tumbling, including needing just three minutes, 19 seconds to claim his hat-trick.
Lewandowski has been regularly linked with a move to Old Trafford and Louis van Gaal, the United manager, is said to be a long-standing admirer of the player.
They may have only secured a 3-0 victory away at Mainz, but the goal tally doesn’t truly summarise the dominance of their display. It was the fastest five-goal haul in Bundesliga history.
He also became the first player to score five goals off the bench in Bundesliga history. And when people thought this might be it, Lewandowski scored his fourth of the night when a Douglas Costa found him open and he had no problems belting that in the goal.
“What can you say?” he said.
The impact of his performance was still being felt the following morning on social media. “I just wanted to shoot, I didn’t really think what will happen afterwards”. It was little surprise that he was named man-of-the-match.
