Lewis Hamilton set for Belgian Grand Prix grid penalty
With Hamilton already up to the limit for two of the six power-unit elements (the turbocharger and the MGU-H) that compromise an F1 engine, the introduction of a new turbocharger or MGU-H will result in the Briton having to start 10 places further back from wherever he qualifies.
“It’s been such a proud few weeks for British sport, with the Olympics and then Cal Crutchlow becoming the first British MotoGP victor in more than 30 years”, Hamilton said. “I’ll do my best to keep the flag flying this weekend”.
The three-time world champion now leads this year’s title race by 19 points from team-mate Nico Rosberg.
He added: “It’s insane how quickly this year is going by”.
Rosberg has never won a Belgian Grand Prix and he thinks the iconic Ardennes circuit is the flawless place to revive his stuttering championship campaign.
Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff said prior to the summer break that the German vehicle manufacturer was considering either Belgium or Italy to be the best venues for Hamilton to take the hit, as they are easier tracks for overtaking than venues coming up later.
Speaking earlier this week, Hamilton, who is one victory shy of 50 career wins, said: “The first half of the season was a bit of a rollercoaster, so it’s great to be in the position I’m in with more than half of the races behind us”.
“I’ve had ups and downs [in other years] but I think this has definitely been harder because it hasn’t felt so much like fault from me not being focused, or me not training or taking the time”, Hamilton said on Tuesday.
“I can’t wait to get in that auto, put my foot down and get everything I can from these next races”. It was great to finally get back on the top step there past year, so fingers crossed I’ll be able to have another strong race this time around. All of that history just makes it even more special, so I’d love to add my name to the winner’s list.
