Lexi Thompson takes lead alone in LPGA Meijer Classic
“I’m not really one to complain about pain because I just fight through it, but yeah, it’s hurting”, Thompson admitted.
“I just try not to pay attention to it”, Thompson said. Thompson has set the pace all week and carded a five-under 66 on Sunday, to go with rounds of 65 and 67 as she made it to 15-under par.
Thompson, who won her first LPGA Tour title at the age of 16, continues to improve each year having recorded two wins and finished in a career high 5th on the money list in 2015 and already this season she has won and another victory this week would move her to 4th on the money list. “The course was playing tough at one point because it got pretty windy”.
“My ball striking wasn’t as good as yesterday so hopefully it can get better progressively on the weekend”, she added.
Ryu, who also fired a 67, made nothing but pars on her front nine, but she shifted her game to the next level on her back nine, where she made four birdies to put her in contention heading into the weekend. It was a lot firmer a year ago.
Henderson said that anyone in the field could end up being the victor.
“It was up and down on the back nine but I am pleased that I went round under par”.
Amy Yang (67) was eight-under along with Kim Sei-young (69), Minjee Lee (67), Haru Nomura (67), Jodi Ewart Shadoff (68), Amelia Lewis (68) and Carlota Ciganda (69).
Ariya Jutanugarn, third last week after winning her previous three starts, was five-under after a 69. She won the last of her 20 LPGA Tour titles in 2001.
Wet and cold weather on day one at Blythefield Country Club gave way to more pleasant warm and dry conditions, with defending champion Lexi Thompson edging out to a narrow one-stroke lead over a group of four including reigning US Women’s Open champion In Gee Chun of South Korea.
