LG Announces The LG G5 – know all the specs, features
At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, LG Electronics revealed the company’s successor to the flagship G4 phone, aptly named the G5. The phone has often been speculated and has been around for a really long while.
Here’s a pre-emptive strike from LG Australia on the prices and release dates of the all-but-certain LG G5 and any other devices we might see: “Availability, pricing and specifications for Australia have yet to be determined”.
We’re not too sure how much these Magic Slot accessories or LG Friends will cost, but it’s an interesting experiment from a company looking to one up Samsung and Apple. The camera area also changed from its prior 16MP sensor to a dual camera setup – 16MP for the main camera and an 8MP wide-angle secondary camera for special effects.
The display went down to a more manageable 5.3-inch, always-on display, but is still kept its IPS LCD QHD resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, which bumped up it up to 555 PPI and protection is provided by Gorilla Glass 4. The front camera, too comes in at 8MP. The LG G5 is an all-metal body, yet it retains memory expansion and a removable battery, something that Samsung seemed unable to accomplish…although they were able to add expansion to the Galaxy S7. Below the primary cameras, rests a fingerprint sensor which doubles up as a power button. 32GB of internal storage is standard, and you’ll find a microSD slot that accommodates cards up to 2TB. One of the unique selling points of the G5 is its capability to work as a “modular” handset, enabling users to swap the bottom of the handset – the, so to say, removable “chin” – with modules offering enhanced features, like improved audio quality and better camera capabilities.
The second module is the LG Hi-Fi Plus, which brings with it an external 32-bit DAC and amplifier.
So far, we’ve only seen a handful of possibilities, but seeing as the upgrade module tech is based on the USB 3.0 protocol and LG is happy to share APIs with developers and manufacturers, these could just be the start of what’s to come. Are you excited about LG’s G5?
