LG Gram Ultra PCs Now Available
LG, best known for its TVs and smartphones, is now branching out into laptops. In comparison, the 13-inch MacBook Air comes in at 2.96 pounds – and 11-inch version is a couple of ounces heavier than the Grams – though the latest MacBook weighs 2.03 pounds, albeit with a 12-inch display.
Hot on the heels of introducing a new Android tablet – the G Pad X 10.1 – and with a new “super phone” apparently on the way – LG is bringing its first laptop line to the USA, one that hopes to challenge the MacBook Air in the ultra-thin-and-light department.
“We recognize this is an extremely competitive category, and are confident consumers will respond well to this product that combines powerful performance with lightweight design”, David VanderWaal, vice president of LG marketing, said in a statement.
The main reason LG wants to push the “Gram” in the us is to actually capitalize on the momentum of Windows 10, since the Korean company plans to sell the device in Microsoft Stores across the Unites States. The laptops are equipped with a virus-protected system and are free of installed junkware.
Users will find the Gram comes with two USB 3.0 ports, a HDMI port, microSD card reader, and a microUSB port. Oddly missing, however, is a backlit keyboard and a SD card reader. A high-grade digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is included to enhance sound quality.
On the downside, LG’s laptops can feel a bit flimsy due to the material they were built with, and the battery life clocks in at 7.5 hours. However, where the Gram shines is with an impressive 14-inch 1080p IPS display. The base specs on the Gram are rounded out with an Intel Core i5 CPU, 128GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM with upgrades to a Core i7 and 256GB available.
