Li-Fi 100 times faster than Wi-Fi
With a 100 times speedier internet delivery, Li-Fi (Life fidelity) works at a 1GB speed per second by using an LED bulb, internet and photo detector as a source.
It was tested this week by Estonian start-up Velmenni, in Tallinn.
A light bulb could be about to make your internet connection 100 times faster. Laboratory tests have shown theoretical speeds of up to 224Gbps. The test was conducted in a company called Velmenni in Estonia. Li-Fi was initiated by Edinburgh University Professor Harald Haas and was first showcased in 2011 at a Technology, Entertainment and Design conference. Li-Fi is a bidirectional, fully networked wireless communication technology similar to Wi-Fi, which works at very high speed.
But while the radio spectrum might be cramped quarters for a rapidly growing internet-reliant global population, just down the road on the electromagnetic spectrum exists the 10,000-times-larger-than-radio visible light spectrum.
At present, Li-Fi is being developed as an alternative to Wi-Fi. This may mean a revolution on earth of videos.
However, when compared to Wi-Fi, a limitation of Li-Fi is that it can not penetrate through walls. That being said, to measure how far we have come in our 4G and Wi-Fi capabilities in such a short period of time may even be an indicator for how far we will be able to leap in so few years.
The technology uses Visible Light Conversation (VLC), a method that employs visible light between 400 and 800 terahertz (THz).
It is hoped the technology will be available to consumers within four years.
“Currently we have designed a smart lighting solution for an industrial environment where the data communication is done through light. We’re also performing a pilot project having a personal client where we’re establishing a Lifi system to get into the Internet within their workplace space”. It transmits data by using Visible Light Communication, which is sent between networks by LED lights that flicker incredibly fast. 224 gigabytes per-second! 18 movies of 1.5 GB every second was finding saved by each.
You will find more benefits than pace. Radio signals need permissions and were limited and thus the LED light technology could be explored.
However, the major disadvantage is the fact that direct sunlight would interfere with Li-fi signal, meaning it cannot be deployed outdoors in the Sunday.
