Lightning beat Blackhawks in clash between streaking clubs
NOTES: Blackhawks LW Richard Panik did not play after oversleeping and reporting late to the team’s morning skate.
A day after head coach Jon Cooper admitted that this game against the team that beat them for the Stanley Cup last season had a little more meaning than most, the Lightning ended the Blackhawks’ franchise-record winning streak with a 2-1 victory. It was Tampa Bay’s seventh straight win, and a very small measure of revenge for the Lightning, who lost to the Hawks in the Stanley Cup Final last June.
Anton Stralman scored in the first period and Victor Hedman had two assists for the Lightning.
Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford (50) stops a shot by Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Ryan Callahan (24) during the first period of an NHL hockey game, Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, in Tampa, Fla. Tampa Bay finished with a 33-18 advantage in shots on goal. Chicago really loves watching the Blackhawks at the United Center, but despite all of this, they are not the only tenant of the Madhouse on Madison. We made some penalties we could have avoided that gave them even more momentum.
The Blackhawks got the desired start, with Anisimov scoring on a pretty backhand just 43 seconds into the game.
“It’s bound to happen that we’re going to lose one here or there”, Patrick Kane said Thursday morning. The Lightning’s own streak now stretches to seven games and keeps Tampa moving forward after a surprisingly sluggish start to the 2015-16 season. The Lightning on the ice have settled things down after sending Drouin to Syracuse so will we see the team why witnessed last spring or will this still be a team trying to pick up 2 points for a playoff spot. With eight seconds left in that power play, Kucherov fired a shot to the top right corner of the net for his 20th goal of the season and a 2-1 lead.
The Tampa Bay Lightning look to build on their six-game winning streak. At the other end of the ice, no one has been confirmed as of this writing as the starter but you’d have to think it’s Ben Bishop between the pipes. Bishop has allowed three goals in his last three games. “I told Jonathan and his agent that we will trade him if and when we can make a deal that’s good for the Tampa Bay Lightning”.
