Lindsey Vonn crashes, carried down mountain in sled
The U.S. ski team noted that Vonn had the best time at the Audi FIS Ski World Cup event in Soldeu-el Tarter when she went down.
Lindsey Vonn has been evacuated on a ski-stretcher after injuring her left knee in a fall during the World Cup Super-G at Soldeu in Andorra. The race halted for around 10 minutes as medical personnel and coaches tended to her. Winds and snowfall had delayed the race and made conditions hard.
Vonn, who started 16th, was followed down by her biggest rival Lara Gut of Switzerland who skied a conservative race, finishing 1.15 seconds off the pace, and moved up to eight points behind Vonn in the overall competition.
Eagle-Vail’s Mikaela Shiffrin wound up 29th, cracking into the points for the second time in only her second World Cup super-G.
Snowfall slowed later starters as many racers shook their heads or shrugged shoulders after finishing.
She clocked 57.33secs on a shortened course, 0.13secs clear of American Laurenne Ross and 0.37secs better than Tamara Tippler of Austria.
Vonn fractured her ankle this past summer, and a major knee injury prevented her from competing in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. As the best skier after Schnarf’s run, Rebensburg finished in seventh place, 0.82 seconds from lead.
It was the Italian’s second career victory. A giant slalom specialist, Brignone earned her first win in the season-opening race in October in Soelden, Austria, and Saturday’s win was her first podium in a different discipline.
