Lindsey Vonn set to compete in last Olympic women’s downhill
– A potential marquee event of these Olympics – a heavyweight showdown in Alpine skiing – is off the table.
Just before Lindsey Vonn embarks on her run in the Olympic downhill on Wednesday, a nervous 55-year-old Austrian will hand her a pair of skis that he believes will be the fastest on the mountain. Now, Shiffrin is pulling out of Tuesday’s downhill race, just a day after she said that she wanted to race after struggling in training. She has been improving steadily at the speed events of downhill and super-G – and earned her first World Cup victory in a downhill in Lake Louise, Canada, in December. She’s there for someone else, and NBCOlympics.com revealed that she carries a reminder of that every time she races.
“Everything that was natural, like walking – you have to get used to that again”, Gut said. Like so many other Alpine skiers at the Pyeongchang Games, Gut has dealt a couple of times with the rigorous process of recovering from the sort of long-term absence pretty much inevitable in a pursuit that involves hurtling one’s body down the steep and icy side of a mountain at 60 miles per hour or more.
Men’s team pursuit final (Wednesday, 8:17 a.m. ET/10:17 p.m. local time): In the men’s event, defending champions Netherlands did not have the flawless start to the team event, finishing second after South Korea. “And I think later I’ll reflect on how much I enjoyed it and how much my teammates and my coaches made it special for me”, Vonn said ahead of Wednesday’s contest. “And afterward, I’ll do some reflecting”.
Snowboard specialist Ledecka has never finished on the podium in World Cup alpine events, her best result being a seventh-placed finish in the downhill past year.
That plan seemed overly ambitious, if not unrealistic, and was scrapped nearly immediately after high winds forced several events to be postponed to later days. Shiffrin is early in her career at age 22, and Vonn is close to the end at age 33.
Regardless of whether Shiffrin had competed in downhill, Vonn is considered a heavy favorite for gold. Tuesday is the one-year anniversary of surgery to fix her anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus.
Humans there probably didn’t live in the caves, de Anda said, but rather went down to them “during periods of great climate stress, to look for water”. “Feel like a million bucks”.
Slovakia finished fourth, one place behind the USA, in preliminary-round play in Group B. The two teams met in the first round, with the US winning 2-1 on a pair of power-play goals scored by Ryan Donato, one of four college players on the US roster. The compressed skiing schedule forced her to sit out Saturday’s super-G race.
“If all works, she’s going to win it”.
“He’s a really tough kid, and you see how much just of a natural goal-scorer he is”, Terry said of Donato.
Her Twitter account was flooded with nasty comments after her stumble cost her a shot at a medal.
Coming down first today, she said her descent felt “pretty good”, although she missed a gate high up the piste.
“I am always nervous, you are never 100 percent sure she will do it, she can make a mistake or whatever”, he added.
The American’s topsy-turvy Games took another unusual twist on Monday when her boyfriend, the French skier Mathieu Faivre, was ordered to pack his bags and return home by French team officials over an angry rant he made after a race at the weekend.
“But now Ted’s gone and Mikaela is not doing it and so I don’t really think we have a strong chance of getting a medal since none of our top athletes are doing it so I probably won’t”.
“It’s worked many times and I hope it continues like that”. She just raced her damn heart out & Trump supporters gloat/cheer/celebrate her inability to medal.
She explained: “He (my grandfather) was supposed to help me”. “I still have to be focused”.
