Lindsey Vonn Sets Record for Women’s Downhill Wins
The 31-year-old American superstar completed the Olympia delle Tofane course in 1min 37.01sec to finish 0.28 seconds clear of Canadian silver medallist Larisa Yurkiw.
Lindsey Vonn set a new record on Saturday with her 37th career World Cup downhill win.
Vonn has now claimed 72nd overall races, meaning she is also closing in on the best men’s mark of 86 held by Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark.
Switzerland’s Lara Gut finished third to maintain a 10-point lead in the overall standings, ahead of Vonn.
The resort known as the Queen of the Dolomites was where the skier then known as Lindsey Kildow recorded her first podium result 12 years ago at the age of 19.
“No”, Vonn said with a big laugh. “I’m just really happy to come away with another win and another record”, she added. I went a little bit too straight on the bottom.
Certainly the Italian resort has been one of Vonn’s favourite hunting grounds, her downhill win on Saturday remarkably was her 10th in Cortina during her career, second only to Lake Louise for her success.
Actually, with only one downhill on the schedule this weekend, Vonn isn’t even sure she’ll get the record here.
On the track where Vonn broke the all-time World Cup win record last season, Vonn battled wind to take the win and break Annemarie Moser-Proell’s record of 36 downhill wins.
Next up, the ladies race super G in Cortina on Sunday.
“I am happy about the way I ski, but this race is like that”, the Swiss skier explained.
Vonn holds a 122-point lead over Yurkiw in the downhill standings, having won four of the five downhills. “But you can’t put the cart before the horse”. “But tomorrow is another race and hopefully another chance to win”.
