Lingmerth takes early second-round lead at PGA
It howled with Olympian fury.
Finau had completed 12 holes while second-round leader Jones and Day had played 10 holes in the final pairing on a hot and steamy afternoon at Whistling Straits.
Tiger Woods missed the cut at the PGA Championship on Saturday, his third straight missed cut in a major.
Matt Jones, the unheralded Aussie who took a two-stroke lead into the third round, kept pace early. He had a chance to break the best-round record on the final hole, but his chip shot just veered off to the right, and he tapped in for par. “Thirty seconds later they blew the horn, so my name was mud walking up the 18th”.
A Spieth victory would emulate Hogan, who was the first to complete a hat-trick of majors in one year, in 1953, and Woods, who did so in 2000.
Spieth has two major titles under his belt this season after winning at Augusta and Chambers Bay. I was staring 1-over on the round down and instead make the turn in 2-under.
One swing changed everything. “Then I was able to take advantage on the front”. But the suspension does him no favors.
“I’ve just got to suck it up and say I’m not playing against only Jordan”, Day said.
“I’m playing with Spieth”, Day said.
Johnson, meanwhile, fell back to a tie for 12th, 1-over through 14 holes, 5-under for the week.
When play resumed, Day was the first man to reach 10-under with a birdie at the 16th.
“I was at a point today where I was not sure of where the ball was going to start off my putter face, and that’s a really ugly feeling”, Spieth said. I hit a lot of good shots, I putted better.
“I’m in a good position, obviously”.

Justin Rose one off lead before storm hits (Mirror). And to have the control that I need to have going forward, it’s starting to come back, which is nice.
“This isn’t as much in my head off the course as it was to try and get the Grand Slam, when I was getting ready to shoot for it the last couple of days at St Andrews“.
World number one Rory McIlroy, back in action to defend his PGA Championship crown after five weeks out due to an ankle injury, was at two under after carding a 71 on Friday.
Tiger Woods is 4-over with five holes left, two strokes below the projected cut line of 2-over.
Then came Day’s double-bogey at 15, where he needed two shots to get out of a bunker.
A bogey on the ninth proved only a blip in his round and three consecutive birdies from the 11th to 13th holes saw the Australian move to the top of the leaderboard on nine-under-par, before the deteriorating weather halted his charge on the 15th. He sailed three tee shots into Lake Michigan and heaved his 6-iron into the water after the fourth shot found the green. Facing a bad lie, he put it into another bunker.
