Links for Life kicks-off Breast Cancer Awareness month in Kern County
As breast cancer awareness activities get underway during the month of October, fundraising efforts are in full swing for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk happening later this month.
“The light is to celebrate those we have felt in their battle with breast cancer, it is to encourage those who are now fighting breast cancer and it is to honor those who have been lost to this disease that strikes one out of seven women”, said Steven Allgood, M.D.
Almost one-in-eight American women will learn they have breast cancer.

Power of Pink aims to inform women, and men, about the risk factors and warning signs of breast cancer and the importance of early detection through self-exam and mammography.
Breast cancer may have touched you or someone you know – a mother, sister, colleague or friend.
Age: Unlike women, the risk increases with age in men and it usually peaks at 71 years. If not caught early, the malignant tumor can spread to other parts of the body.
It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month and we had a chance to visit ‘Ohana, Memorial’s Mammography Center to learn how they’re raising awareness about breast cancer prevention in Yakima. I was with her through all the chemo treatments. The American Cancer Society reports that the breast cancer death rate is down 34% since 1990.
“Women and their families are not aware of the concept of early detection and at the same time they have very less information about the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment methods and health facilities available”, she added.
