Lion killed in illegal hunt, American accused
The deaths of both lions have sparked global outrage and forced both Palmer and Seski to go into hiding as death threats mount and their professional lives are put on hold.
This American was identified as Jan Casimir Seski of Murrysville, Pennsylvania, by Zimbabwe’s National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.
“Seski, a gynecological oncologist who directs the Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, is a big-game hunter according to safari outfitters and bow-hunting sites”. The Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority alleges that the hunt took place on land where it was not allowed and without approval. He was released on bail by magistrate Portia Mhlanga, who also asked him to surrender his passport and report to the police twice a week.
The Zimbabwean government did not say what species of animals were hunted in the allegedly illegal safari, which authorities say was conducted without a quota or permit. He can be seen in pictures online posing with a number of dead animals, including a zebra, elephant and hippo. “As required by the rules in Zimbabwe, he promptly notified the Zimbabwean authorities and provided them with all of the information and paperwork required by law”, the statement reads.
Professional hunter Theo Bronkhorst arrived for trial on Wednesday in Hwange, Zimbabwe, accused of failing to “prevent an unlawful hunt”.
Jan C. Seski saw patients in his Oakland office this morning and declined to speak with reporters. Officials in Zimbabwe have called for Palmer’s extradition to face chargers.
But the government of Zimbabwe, where Cecil was killed, is doing all it can to divert attention from the real problem.
Cecil’s killer, Walter James Palmer, became one of the most hated men in the world after he lured the lovely creature out of the Hwange National Park and shot him with crossbows. Palmer is also accused of financing an illegal hunt.
“It appeared to me all the things he does is aboveboard”, Hahn stated.
The Justice Department has no known recent precedent for prosecuting American hunters for actions overseas who do not import animal parts, said two department officials. Delta is the only U.S. airline to serve South Africa directly.
“The logic is that should you maintain killing them, they may turn into endangered”, Menendez spokesman Steven Sandberg stated Sunday.
