Lions GM Bob Quinn undecided on coach Jim Caldwell’s future
On Monday afternoon, the Detroit Lions announced Bob Quinn as their next general manager. “I’m sure he’ll do a good job”.
“That’s what you do”. Team owner Jim Irsay fired vice chairman Bill Polian and his general manager, Chris Polian – two longtime employees with a lot of ties to Indianapolis. “That’s what you always try to do”.
Quinn was introduced as the Lions’ GM on Monday. Which raises the question: How did the coach end up with a black eye heading into Tuesday morning’s press conference? Given Accorsi’s history of success, things might start looking up sooner rather than later in Detroit.
Two days after his initial interview in Providence, R.I., Quinn traveled to Detroit for several more hours of meetings. “I think he’s the quarterback that we want here for the future”. “And that’s why we did what we did”. He served as the general manager for the Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns and Giants for stretches, helping spearhead successful runs for all three franchises. Quinn said he won’t recruit Johnson back to the Lions right now, with the season still fresh, but it seems they’ll chat after some time passes.
Quinn says it will be up to him to use every avenue available to bolster that part of the roster.
Because Quinn was director of pro personnel he was involved in bringing in Butler and the seven others. They put eight players on the field during the Super Bowl previous year that were not with them at the final cutdown (after training camp), that they acquired during the season.
Accorsi says he spoke to people who worked with Quinn, including New England coach Bill Belichick.
“You study organizations, but you’re not there and you’re not in the draft room”, Accorsi said.
“I think I’ll live”.
