Lions WR Johnson plans to make decision about future soon
In a surprise announcement, Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson released a statement Wednesday saying he is mulling retirement.
Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson says he plans to make a decision about his future soon.
“I would expect to have a decision regarding this matter in the not-too-distant future”, Johnson continued.
Johnson has four seasons remaining on his seven-year contract.
Foster also mentions a somewhat surprising thought that Johnson is seriously considering walking away from football altogether. “I think he’s been through enough”. It would be an incredible blow to the Lions, their fans, and all football fans, if he were to retire, but if Calvin wants to hang up his spikes, he’s more than earned the right to that decision.
Johnson, 30, caught 88 passes for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns in 2015, while playing through nagging injuries. He’s made the money, got the records, but whatever.
If Johnson actually is thinking about quitting the game, he needs to realize that how he feels at the end of a season will be much different than how he’ll feel at the start of a new one.
The bottom line is that Johnson surely won’t turn up his nose at $16 million for one more year, and that the Lions surely won’t pay him that amount. “It was just his fifth most productive season of his career”.
After the Lions’ final game of the season, Johnson declined to speculate as to whether he’d return to the team in 2016.
During Johnson’s time in Detroit they played in 2 Wildcard games and they lost them both.
