Lionsgate is developing Sicario sequel around Benicio Del Toro’s character
The movie is reported to be centered around Benicio Del Toro’s assassin, ‘Alejandro.’ Read on for more details.
The film’s writer Taylor Sheridan will reportedly direct the project, taking over from Villeneuve.
“Sicario” is already a massive hit, having raked $401,288 last weekend from just six theaters, making a record per theater takings this year. The film also stars Emily Blunt and Josh Brolin, but there’s no mention of them for the next film. The film features a key narrative twist, that reveals Alejandro to actually be a deadly, former Colombian drug kingpin, using his involvement with USA government task force, to take back control of the drug trade that was ruthlessly taken from him by a Mexican cartel. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past [Benicio Del Toro], the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive. “Before the release of the movie, I was talking to Denis and I said what happened to this character?” he said.
Wachsberger commented that Sicario has more than enough to be nominated for the top awards like “Best Movie, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Music, and, of course, the actors”.
I’m wary of a followup, if only because “Sicario” as it stands a tremendous picture all on its own, and it feels self-contained.
“I try not to get weighed down with what people are going to think of me”, she said. You end the movie wondering what is going to happen.
“Sicario” goes wide on October 2nd. AV Club critic Mike D’angelo describes the film as “less inclined to provide a cathartic, climactic victory, and watching its intensely admirable heroine gradually become all but irrelevant wouldn’t boil the blood in the same way were she a dude”.
This is a movie that needs word of mouth.
