List of nominees for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards
The women of Carol and men of The Big Shortmade a big push in the Oscar race Thursday with their nominations for the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards. By the time the Oscars roll out, everyone better learn how to pronounce the first name of Saiorse Ronan (sersha, like inertia, said Ryan Gosling when he recently gave her a Hollywood Film Award), the actress who gave a luminous performance as an Irish immigrant in “Brooklyn”.
Perhaps the most glaring omission from this morning’s nominations: Johnny Depp, who will now go down in Golden Globe history as having been nominated for the 2010 critical flop The Tourist, but ignored for Black Mass, the Whitey Bulger biopic for which the actor underwent an eery physical transformation.
“Not only is the Schumer-penned flick up for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, though – the star is as well”.
Carol has secured five nominations including best drama film and best score, and is the most nominated film this year.
The Golden Globes are sometimes seen as a prelude to the Emmys, so Thursday’s nomination will heighten Hulu’s anticipation for those nominations too.
The Globes, chosen by a group of around 90 journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association rather than members of the film industry, have separate categories for comedy and drama and can include a wider array of films. “Carol”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Revenant”, “Room” and “Spotlight” all received nominations. “Though, both are up against extreme competition-Smith will be facing off against The Danish Girl’s Eddie Redmayne and The Revenant’s Leonardo DiCaprio, while Damon is up against The Big Short’s Steve Carrell and Christian Bale”.
Though some questionable category decisions left less humorous films competing for best comedy or musical, two of comedy’s top stars will crash a particularly somber awards season: Melissa McCarthy and Amy Schumer. Along with Elba and Rylance, the supporting actor category was rounded out by Paul Dano (“Love & Mercy”) and Michael Shannon (“99 Homes”).
The event, to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel’s Grand Ballroom on January 10 next year, will be hosted by Ricky Gervais.
Foreign Language: “The Brand New Testament”, “The Club”, “The Fencer”, “Mustang”, “Son of Saul”.
The nominees for best screenplay are “Steve Jobs”, “Spotlight”, “The Hateful Eight”, “Room” and “The Big Short”.
Regina King, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for TV, American Crime.
The Walking Dead – Any hope the big Emmy wins by Game Of Thrones earlier this year could signal a new day for genre shows obviously didn’t make it into the HFPA memo – not that we’d ever suggest they are out of touch.
Actor, Musical or Comedy: Jeffrey Tambor, “Transparent”; Aziz Ansari, “Master of None”; Rob Lowe, “The Grinder”; Patrick Stewart, “Blunt Talk”; Gael Garcia Bernal, “Mozart in the Jungle”.
Best Actress – Drama for TV were Robin Wright for House of Cards, Eva Green for Penny Dreadful, Viola Davis for How to Get Away with Murder, Caitriona Balfe for Outlander and Taraji P. Henson for Empire.
Taylor, who stars as Piper Chapman in prison comedy-drama seriesOrange is the New Black, missed out for Best Actress in a Comedy, with Rachel Bloom, Jamie Lee Curtis, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Gina Rodriguez and Lily Tomlin all receiving nominations today.
From the world of television, six shows – “American Crime”, “Fargo”, “Mr. Robot”, “Outlander”, “Transparent” and “Wolf Hall” – have scored three nominations each. She is up for Best Actress in a Limited TV Series for American Horror Story.
