Little League coach loses job while at World Series
The Northwood Little League team is getting ready for their appearance Friday in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. 7 On Your Side caught up with the team out of Taylors at batting practice Wednesday morning.
“It didn’t pan out and they sent me an email today, you know, that two-week notice and that’s it”, said Ramirez, who serves as the team’s dugout coach. “They’re representing us. I’m just really excited for them”, said Pam Eveleth, who has family in Harrisburg.
Cherie Roberts, mother of Cronulla Little League player Koby Roberts from Sydney, Australia, said being in Williamsport was “absolutely awesome”. Organizers and fans hope that this year scandal and controversy will not be included. They’re already wearing their new gear sponsored by Russell Athletic, but they’ve gotten a whole lot more too.
From Thursday until August 30, the five-round tournament will progress in a double-elimination bracket format that includes several consolation games. “They did a lot of silly things and put some of the kids in costumes and stuff like that they’ll show during commercial break”, said Great Lakes Manager, Rick Kelley.
“Nothing can make up for missing out on the Little League World Series but we are appreciative that Little League is bringing us up there and recognizing us at the Great Lakes champs”, Coach Kevin Ricketts said.
“We’ve been talking with other teams, playing with other teams, ping pong mostly”, said Pearland player, Carter Ostrom. “I have goosebumps, I can’t wait for the first game”, explained Mack.
“I’m proud of the team going to Williamsport, but I’m envious”. Hundreds of floats, including 16 teams from different countries, filled the streets but when the Bowling Green parents saw their little leaguers, the excitement was visible to say the least.
The game will air on ESPN.
A parade was held Wednesday that kicked off all of the events this week.
“I would have liked the birthday ‘W, ‘ ” Lannom said.
Organizers suspended play Thursday because of rain and a chance of lightning.
