Liverpool 2, Bordeaux 1: Man of the Match
Henri Saivet scored for Bordeaux after a costly mistake by Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet (Peter Byrne/PA) But everyone was blaming Mignolet, asking why he was time wasting in the first place when Liverpool were in control of the game, even though it was 0-0.
But the lead did not last long after Christian Benteke was brought down in the penalty area in the 37th minute, allowing James Milner to take a spot-kick, from which he made no mistake.
Christian Benteke then put Liverpool ahead, leaving them 2-1 up at the break.
Roberto Firmino – moved out to the left wing despite scoring in the 4-1 win over Manchester City on Saturday – was not hampered by his change of position, making two great runs in behind the Bordeaux defence inside the opening 10 minutes but failing to test Cedric Carrasso from either.
Bordeaux duly capitalised on Mignolet’s misjudgement as Saivet emphatically placed into the top corner. Allen got the ball just outside the box and unleashed a good shot on target.
Mignolet held onto the ball for over 20 seconds before the referee finally blew up and awarded Bordeaux the free.
It’s half Man of the Match poll and half player rankings, and we want to use it to find out who you think played well after each Liverpool match and, at the other end, who you’d maybe like to see given the next game off.
“Now we can go top of the table in the next round so it’s a big chance for us”.
Milner levelled it up from the penalty spot before a sublime Benteke goal guaranteed the win for the Reds who could be without Daniel Sturridge for another while.
