Liverpool announce Alex Manninger capture
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp signed Premier League title victor Alex Manninger because he can not recall on-loan goalkeepers from English clubs.
Manninger, who marks his 21st season as a professional, detailed the requirements Klopp expects from his last line of defense.
“Honestly, it was a surprise”, he told the club’s official website. After these years, in Italy and the last four years in Germany, I hadn’t given up, I still waited for the phone call. “He has already shown some really good moments in his career but the most exciting and important thing for me and my staff is that there is still so much extra to come from him”, continued the German manager.
The former Chelsea player, who was a member of the Germany squad that reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016, has signed a five-year deal at the Westfalenstadion for an undisclosed fee.
“I think he wants a lively goalkeeper, a goalkeeper he can count on and he definitely has those in this squad”.
“I hope if that’s only a couple of percent, we’ll do the rest”.
A former Austria global with 34 caps to his name, Manninger has also represented clubs such as Fiorentina, Udinese and Juventus during his career. He’s also played for Arsenal and Juventus, among other teams.
Despite Seaman coming back and taking his No 1 spot, Manninger was awarded a Premier League winners’ medal by the club at the end of the campaign.
The likes of Danny Ward, Ryan Fulton and Adam Bogdan have all left the club on loan this summer, and Klopp is pleased to have brought in the experience of Manninger as cover.
Jurgen Klopp continued his rebuilding at Anfield as he roped in his second goalkeeping signing of the season in ex-Arsenal stopper Alex Manninger.
“He brings us great experience”, he said.
Manninger had a trial with Everton in 2012 before joining Augsburg, where he made 34 Bundesliga appearances in four years.
