Liverpool beat Leeds United to reach semifinals of EFL Cup
Woodburn breaks Michael Owen’s record having made his competitive debut for Liverpool on Saturday against Sunderland.
The Welsh youth global secured the record, previously held by Michael Owen, when he doubled Liverpool’s advantage in the EFL Cup quarterfinal 2-0 win over Leeds United at Anfield on Tuesday night.
Despite a bunch of injuries, including Brazilian magician Philippe Coutinho, Jurgen Klopp still sent a very strong starting team to face Leeds United, as Georginio Wijnaldum and Sadio Mane made the starting XI.
There were no signs that Klopp had been unsure over selecting the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kevin Stewart, Ovie Ejaria or even Ben Woodburn.
A more inexperienced LFC side battled through against dogged resistance but the arrival of Ben Woodburn onto the field coincided with 2 goals in the final quarter of the game.
Cape Town – Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said Ben Woodburn would benefit from staying out of the public glare after a starring role in their EFL Cup win over Leeds United.
“I would have scored if I was in that situation!” “The only problem is I’m afraid about all you in the media”, he explained.
“I’m pleased for him because he’s been working hard also”. That is why I am so quiet.
“Phil needs between five and a few weeks until we have him back”, Klopp said ahead of their League Cup quarter-final against Leeds. That means when he is on the pitch he is absolutely allowed to score goals.
“With a little bit more composure, we would have scored two or three goals”.
Roofe struck the woodwork with a curling finish early in the second half, narrowly failing to snatch the lead at a time when United were in control of the tie.
“The game-plan we followed very well and on another night I think we would have come out with a different result”.
Woodburn, a 67th-minute substitute, sealed the win at Anfield after Divock Origi’s second in as many matches broke the deadlock in the 76th minute.
