Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp taking no risks with Daniel Sturridge
“Everybody knows of the quality of Leicester and what we had to do today was play simple football”.
Sturridge has dealt with injuries since last season and picked up his latest hamstring injury, that has sidelined him for four weeks.
Liverpool striker Christian Benteke says he is ready to “run more” following a frank conversation with manager Jurgen Klopp.
“I am still a young player and I want to learn”, he said.
The German, who recently held man-to-man talks with the player, said: “I don’t think that you should always create a scenario like this with pressure on the player and say, “Come on, now you have to show”.
“We really, really have to be patient now”.
Klopp has also laid down the law to Christian Benteke.
“If we do this, then maybe we can change something or we will be here talking about Daniel Sturridge for the next ten years”.
However, Klopp, who inherited the powerhouse frontman from predecessor Brendan Rodgers, is looking to provide the right support to help Benteke fulfil his potential.
“So you can see what we have to do”.
Liverpool put their recent miserable form behind them on Saturday with a 1-0 victory against league leaders Leicester City, to once again restore faith in the club’s direction under Jurgen Klopp.
“We need the striker for the other options too, to work for the other minutes”.
“Sometimes you don’t have to play well, you just have to fight to win the games”.
Benteke’s second-half victor was his sixth of the campaign since a £32.5 million summer move from Aston Villa, though he has come under flak for disappointing on the whole and spurning a number of good opportunities.
“In the second half we conceded a goal which, if we are more attentive, we could close Benteke down better because it was three of my players against two of them and Benteke was alone. The team started show the crowd that from this moment on that we were prepared to do more to make it easier for the crowd to enjoy what we were doing”.
“We had a great team spirit before the last three or four games when we were down but I think the fans saw we have been together all the time”.
“I want to start, of course”.
