Liverpool boss Rodgers: James Milner class act
New recruit James Milner scored the victor as Liverpool recovered from an early goal down to beat Australia’s Brisbane Roar 2-1 in a pre-season game in Brisbane on Friday.
The game was blown wide open, however, on 17 minutes as 22-year-old Petratos was squared the ball on the edge of the box and he stepped to the penalty spot before firing an impressive finish past Simon Mignolet.
Young produced a superb stop to deny captain Jordan Henderson from close range shortly after the hour, before Brisbane substitute Devante Clut went close with a curling effort from 25 yards. You always want players like that in your squad, but as a player you want to play in your favourite position.
Liverpool are back in action on Monday morning as they entertain fellow A-League side Adelaide United hoping to maintain their 100% record in pre-season. Meninga also said he expects a jam-packed Suncorp Stadium with the same type of atmosphere it had during Queensland’s 52-6 Origin win over Blues in their series decider last week.
His performances so far in pre-season have earned much praise from supporters and the England worldwide is delighted to be part of it.
In the list below, we profile five young Reds’ who will be hoping to make their mark this coming season and discuss where and when they might get an opportunity to prove themselves.
Young made a string of strong saves and had plenty of reason to perform in his reunion with Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who recruited him as a teenager into Reading’s academy. Sometimes when you’re such a great professional, you can get moved about; it’s an attribute that is good to have as a player.
A victory courtesy of goals from two midfielders is unlikely to dampen the desire of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers to secure the services of an out-and-out striker like reported target Christian Benteke.
“He has wonderful personality and is a top class footballer”.
“We had to work very hard to get him in but we will see over the course of the season how important he is for us. I think for us we really focus on the positives”, Rodgers said.
