Carlo Ancelotti, who was sacked by Real Madrid at the end of last season is also available, but will only be considered if Klopp declines Liverpool’s offer.

With negotiations now close to a conclusion, he is expected to arrive on Merseyside ahead of putting pen to paper on what is believed to be a three-year contract. The former Borussia Dortmund coach had been the hot favourite from the start.

Asked about Klopp’s prospects at Anfield, Hummels said his former manager would be a ideal fit.

Defender Mats Hummels, who joined Klopp’s Dortmund from Bayern Munich in 2008 and was a key figure in their success, had nothing but praise for his former boss.

Klopp spent his entire 12-year playing career at Bundesliga side Mainz, before going on to become their longest-serving manager from 2001 to 2008.

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes Klopp would represent “a very good appointment”, while another ex-Germany global who played for the Reds, Karl-Heinz Riedle, praised the 48-year-old for his coaching acumen.

Rodgers leaves Liverpool in a position from which a new manager of the quality of Klopp can come in and make an impact over the vast majority of the season.

His first match in charge of Liverpool will be against Tottenham on October 17. At Liverpool, it is assured that he will have plenty of time to turn the fortunes of the club around.

There has already been plenty of speculation about whether Klopp could work with Liverpool’s transfer committee in the same way that Rodgers did, but that is one area where Ferguson feels managers need to retain control. He won the league in 2011 and 2012 and reached the Champions League final in 2013, but his energy-sapping approach had taken its toll on the squad by the time he quit in May.
