Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard retires from football
The Liverpool manager became increasingly exasperated as questions on Gerrard’s retirement and future dominated his pre-Sunderland press conference, viewing the issue as a distraction from the task of winning three points against David Moyes’s team at Anfield on Saturday.
The 36-year-old will go down as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players after a stellar career which saw him win the Champions League and two FA Cups with the Reds. And that will be possible only when he makes a comeback in the sideline as Liverpool manager. He made 114 appearances for his country over 14 years, scoring 21 goals and even serving as the captain for a spell.
He also scored 21 times in a Three Lions shirt.
Liverpool manager Klopp at his press conference yesterday reiterated “the door is always open” to Gerrard, whose has been a regular visitor to Melwood during his time in MLS.
The former England worldwide moved to MLS side LA Galaxy in 2015, capping off a glittering Premier League career with his boyhood club.
“I feel lucky to have experienced so many wonderful highlights over the course of my career”, said Gerrard.
” At global level, I feel privileged to have won 114 England caps and to have had the honour of captaining my country”. He was also considered as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation and came second to Kenny Dalglish in the 100 Players Who Shook The World.
“He’s had a fantastic career – what more can you say?”
Speaking to the Paddy Power blog, the former German worldwide, who scored the final goal at the old Wembley stadium, tried to debunk certain myths around the inner-workings of football clubs. I’ve had a few moments over the past few months where I thought “I didn’t play that well today” or “that guy got the better of me today”.
“I obviously never wanted him to go, but my advice to Stevie was there is only two clubs you’d go to – and that’s the Spanish giants”.
Major figures in the world of football have paid tribute to Gerrard’s career, including Brazilian footballer Kaka, Gerrard’s opponent in that final in 2005.
